About

Ralph Kihn

I am Ralph and I am the owner and operator of Pioneer Painting - Interior & Exterior Residential Painting located in Clare, MI. In addition to residential, I have experience in commercial and industrial totaling twenty two years in all. I am also the inventor of the Roof Rider.

I came up with the idea for the Roof Rider while on the job. For years I have been on roofs painting something such as widows, fascia and soffit, siding and trim. Each time I had to try and balance myself on the roof while holding my cut can in one hand while holding my brush in the other hand or attempt to balance my cut can on the sloped roof and just hope that it does not tip over and spill.

Roof Rider

This "balancing act" can be very difficult and extremely unsafe and can also extend the length of the job costing valuable time and money. The Roof Rider ended these issues. I have used the Roof Rider myself on actual jobs and it has worked flawlessly every time. With the Roof Rider I am able to free up my hands allowing me to maneuver on the roof more safely and efficiently. The Roof Rider itself is lightweight, portable and very easy to maneuver and adjust between eight different roof pitches.

The Roof Rider is not just limited to painters and their paint cans. Any contractor or even a regular home owner that does work on a roof can benefit from the Roof Rider. Not only is the Roof Rider able to hold paint cans but it can also hold tools and small parts aiding in the prevention of these items sliding down a roof which can save valuable time in "chasing" after these tools and parts.

Purpose & Benefits

  • Safety first. Allows painters and other contractors to balance themselves for enhanced safety and stability.
  • Accident prevention. Prevents paint cans from tipping over and spilling, as well as tools from sliding down a roof.
  • Level work area. Holds paint cans and tools level on a sloped, shingled roof.
  • Time is money. Saves a considerable amount of time and frustration.
  • Hands free. Frees up both hands for other tasks.

Problems Solved

As safety is a number one priority and falls being the greatest hazard on construction sites the Roof Rider can aid in the prevention of falls by allowing a worker to keep their hands more free to more easily and safely manuver on a roof. The Roof Rider allows for an instant, temporary creation of a level work area where a worker can place their tools aiding in the prevention of their tools sliding down a roof. With the Roof Rider a worker such as a painter is able to place their paint cans, either a one gallon can or a five gallon bucket, to prevent unnecessary spills which can also save time and money.

Detailed Description & Features

Roof Rider provides a safe, convenient, and stable way to balance paint cans and tools on a sloped roof for maximum efficiency and enhanced safety. This innovative product may comprise two flat boards, made from plastic or other suitable material, attached together with a piano hinge to allow for adjustment. Each board can measure approximately 12” in width, 16” in length, and 3/8” thick and can be positioned one on top of the other. Between the boards, on the underside of the top board, can be a barn-door hinge that acts as a brace when the boards are adjusted. This brace can be inserted into notches located on the top side of the bottom board, which can correspond to different pitches of roofs.

Further, the top of the top board can have a non-skid surface to prevent paint cans and tools from sliding off of the top. The top board can also have various size cutout holes to accommodate different tools and three mini levels attached to each side and one in the front. The bottom of the bottom board can have carpet attached to it to prevent sliding. The exact specifications may vary upon manufacturing.
